Making Time for You: A Day of Complete Wellness

In a world where pressures are spontaneously placed upon us, prioritising our well-being, which should be at the top of our list tends to take the back seat. This is where Global Wellness Day comes in – A day dedicated to nurturing our physical, mental and emotional well-being. It’s also a day that, once observed properly, provides solutions to last a lifetime. Let’s delve in to learn how to embrace this special day and pocket its wealth of knowledge.

Global Wellness Day is celebrated annually on the second Saturday of June. It’s a day for us to reflect on the importance of setting time aside to care for our physical, emotional and mental well-being. Though life brings many responsibilities, we should acknowledge that our well-being is our priority.

With the slogan “One day can change your whole life,” this non-profit day is unique and has specific aims:

  • To recognise the value of our lives
  • To pause and think, even if for just one day of the year
  • To be free from the stress of everyday life and bad habits
  • To make peace with ourselves
  • To raise awareness about living well and increase motivation, not just for today, but for the remaining 366 days of the year

But where exactly did this holiday stem from and why?

In 2012, Belgin Aksoy of Turkey created what was simply known at the time as “Wellness Day” which quickly became an international success. This was an official first day dedicated to living well.

Having worked in the tourism and hotel industry for 27 years, Ms Aksoy dedicated her life to creating a physically, mentally and spiritually better environment not only in her workspaces but across the world.

Additionally, every year Global Wellness Day follows a particular theme and this year is #MagentaNature. This theme symbolises a journey of reconnection with nature, inviting individuals to embrace the transformative power of harmonising with surrounding elements.

What is the precept or rule of thumb one should take into consideration when assessing one’s well-being?

Holism – Persons should reflect and assess if they are truly doing well in all areas of their lives. How’s your mental, physical and emotional state? How can you live a healthier and better life? Many times, one if not all is neglected in some way. Once we assess ourselves, we can draw focus to the area or areas that need improvement to ascertain complete healing.

Self-responsibility- tying into the point of Holism and assessing ourselves, we should take accountability for our well-being. Many times, we can see health declining but these small signs are ignored until they manifest into a stage where recovery is almost impossible. With that, we should be proactive in noting the early stages of any ailment and ensure we put preventative measures in place.

Balance- We should note that every aspect of our well-being is equally important. For example, one would quicker run to the clinic for a check-up if he or she experiences chest pains as opposed to a broken toenail. However, this should not be the case as both equally require attention. This chipped toenail could become a highly infected wound which can cause numbness or ultimately surgery rectification.

Lastly, being positive and proactive.

According to several studies, the most common health problem in the world is depression. This problem is often manifested in the form of insomnia, stress, poor nutrition, physical inactivity, obesity, and heart disease.

Our lives are governed by our thoughts and perceptions of situations. We should seek to condition our minds to look at the positive aspects of current scenarios and those ahead of us to avoid falling into depression. In addition to being positive, we should aim to be proactive in every situation. For example, being hopefu l that a toe fungus would cure is a positive outlook but that on its own can lead to negligence. One should be proactive by seeking medical assistance coupled with an optimistic outlook.

With these precepts, persons should be right on track to healthier living, but where can one start? My suggestion would be obvious, to take a step back to reflect and what better place to do so than on a holiday.
