But firstly- what is pickleball?
Pickleball is a fun, social and friendly sport that is easy for beginners to learn and can quickly develop into a fast-paced competitive game.
It is usually played in doubles (2 vs 2) and takes place outdoors or on a court similar to a tennis court, only smaller. Players use paddles and a lightweight plastic pickleball. The rules are very simple and acceptable for all ages.
Discovered in 1965 by two friends in Bainbridge Island WA (near Seattle), Joel Pritchard and Bill Bell returned home after playing golf one Saturday to find their families sitting around with nothing to do. They decided to improvise. The property had an old badminton court and because they couldn’t find a full set of rackets, they started playing with paddles and a perforated plastic ball. They lowered the net to 36 inches together and created the rules, keeping in mind the original purpose of providing a game the whole family could enjoy together.
Somewhat of a mix between tennis and table tennis, teams take turns batting the ball over the net and it is played to 11 points where teams must win by a clear two-point margin. There are a few small intricacies in the rules that set pickleball apart such as who delivers service, which ball the side must serve and the infamous no-volley zone, known as the “kitchen” all of which can be easily explained by one of our helpful activity staff or ‘bodyguards’ as we commonly refer to them at StolenTime.
Picklers (the unofficial nickname for pickleball players) should only need a few tries to get the hang of things and despite its slightly slower pace, it still provides excellent benefits and a really enjoyable way to socialise. These qualities also make it ideal for couples and groups of friends.
Benefits of Pickleball
It keeps you in shape
Pickleball may not be as physically intense as other racket sports, but it does keep you in shape and offers significant physical benefits such as improved overall fitness, improved cardiovascular health, lower cholesterol levels and decreased blood pressure. Furthermore, It is also said to improve muscle strength and prevent the development of bone diseases such as osteoporosis.
Improves mental health
Studies have found that a commitment to a hobby and serious leisure is correlated to greater mental health, including one study that found that individuals who played pickleball regularly tended to have lower levels of depression. The social aspects of the game as well as the physical activity make pickleball worthwhile, leading to better sleep, improved cognition, greater feelings of well-being and reduced risk of anxiety. It’s also a really nice way to make friends!
Lengthens lifespan
Research shows that regular exercise can help you live longer. For example, a recent study showed that the life expectancy of a tennis player is nearly 10 years longer than people who don’t exercise and that even a small increase in physical activity could greatly reduce annual deaths. Pickleball, therefore, could significantly improve your life expectancy, especially with the findings that activities involving more social interaction showed the greatest longevity effects.
